Artists Respond Grant Opportunity
July 20, 2020
Recognizing that artists help their communities through challenging times, the Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) is committed to investing in artists’ ability to provide respite through inspiration, connection, and education.
Through the Artists Respond Grant Program, COA awarded 73 grants for artists and teaching artists to support the creation and presentation of free and accessible on-line arts-based experiences, learning opportunities, and services to audiences across Connecticut—and beyond.
STAYING CREATIVE IN ONLINE LEARNING: Theatre integration
This online professional development workshop is for K-8 Teachers who would like to learn how to use the arts, specifically theatre and movement to support and enhance their teaching online and in the classroom (hybrid model). Examples will be shared of students doing the theatre activities on Zoom. These theatre skills allow for students to have a deeper understanding of primary texts, and increase skills of retelling a story, recalling key details, and identifying major events, characters, and themes in a story. Teachers will learn theatre techniques such as Tableau, Actor’s Neutral, and Pantomime and be able to apply them to their own practice in a fun creative way! Teachers will have access to a professional arts educator for the purpose of modeling and coaching arts strategies for teachers to integrate into daily practice. Points of integration are teacher-driven and based on student need. All arts activities are grounded in both CCSS and National Core Arts Standards.
“Students were active participants in retelling the story of the tortoise and the hare. The tableau and pantomime activities helped all students have access to the text, despite the wide variety in reading levels, and gave everyone a chance to show their own interpretation of the events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. Incorporating art into the literacy lesson helped students when it was time to illustrate and write about an important event from the story because they had just acted it out. This activity helped all students, especially those who are kinesthetic learners.

The online workshop is scheduled for Friday, August 14, from 4:30-6:30 pm. A Zoom link and survey will be sent out upon registration.
